The UK Home Office issued updated guidance this week that tightens the rules for dependants accompanying Nigerian nationals on student visas, part of a wider government drive to cut net migration.
What changed: Postgraduate students enrolled in courses rated below Research or taught Master's level can no longer bring dependants. This applies to new applications from August 1, 2026.
What did not change: PhD students and government-sponsored students may still bring dependants. Existing visa holders are unaffected until their current leave expires.
If you have an application in progress: The Home Office says applications submitted before August 1 will be assessed under the old rules. Processing times are currently running at 8 to 12 weeks for out-of-country applications.
